About Us

Why Sailing?

The sound and feel of water and wind is experiential.
It soothes, relaxes and helps us realize our lives are bigger than the challenges we face. Cancer treatment can be rigorous and life threatening. It takes an emotional toll on the patient and the burden is shared by their loved ones. We believe the storm of cancer can be calmed with sailing.

Serenity Sailing is a non-profit 501(c)3 Organization newly formed in collaboration with the western Lake Erie sailing community, The Victory Center of Toledo, and regional cancer treatment centers.

Robin Cutcher, RN, CDCES
President and Co-Founder.
Luna Pier, Michigan.

Robin has lived in the Toledo area her entire life, moving recently to the Lake Erie shore in Luna Pier, Michigan. Robin’s career focus has been working with individuals challenged by diabetes and was the Executive Director of Diabetes Youth Services for over 20 years. Having experienced the “Storm of Cancer” personally, she began to consider a way to pay it forward and serve those struggling with this prevalent disease. New Horizons was owned by Robin and her husband Greg and is now donated to Serenity Sailing. Sailing brought friends, camaraderie and great peace she hopes to share with the community.

Barbara Markle,  retired RN.
Board Member

Worked Oncology at St. Charles Hospital and in Public Health at the Health Department. Barbara has lived in Toledo for 10 years and then in Monroe,  Michigan since 1991.
Barbara learned about Robin’s desire to start Serenity Sailing from her husband Garry, before his passing, who was very supportive of the idea. When Robin approached her to help with Serenity Sailing,  she didn’t hesitate at all to jump on board. Also touched by cancer in her family,  she felt this was a great opportunity to help heal a broken heart and help those struggling with cancer.
